Unfortunately not. This is a digital photography competition.

Are there restrictions on when a photo was taken for the competition?

No, there are no time-based restrictions concerning when a photo was taken.

I live overseas from the UK. Am I still eligible for this competition?

Definitely! We welcome submissions from anyone anywhere in the world.

I submitted my work to the competition, why is it not being displayed on your social media?

We select some submissions for inclusion in our social media channels. These are curated selections, meaning that not all photos can be displayed.

Are there restrictions if I’ve submitted a photo to a different competition?

No, there are no restrictions. You are free to submit photographs that you have submitted to different competitions.

Are there ethical guidelines which should be followed?

You should get a signed model release form for portraits of people. Images of children can be especially problematic, so if a photograph contains an image of a minor (person under the age of 18) then photographers will be required to submit a minor release form signed by the parent or legal guardian of the minor before we can display it on our site or show it in our exhibition. Out of general courtesy, it’s always polite to ask people if it’s ok to take their picture. Please email fftnlondon@gmail.com if you'd like us to send you a template for a release form.

There is a tick box on the website where you can confirm you have received permissions.

Images that purport to be “news” photographs, reporting, photojournalism, or documentary photography, should comply with the ethical guidelines of the National Press Photographers Association (https://nppa.org/code-ethics) in general, as well as those proposed by UNICEF for ethical reporting on children https://www.unicef.org/eca/media/ethical-guidelines

No people or objects may be added, rearranged, reversed, distorted or removed from such photographs. If images are staged, this should be made clear in your written statements and captions.

It is important, always, to take into account the ethical considerations of photography, and to protect vulnerable people from potential harm that could be inflicted as a result of publishing images that expose or identify individuals or groups who may be or may become vulnerable as a result of the publication of the photographs.

How is the prize awarded?

A shortlist will be selected from the entries. The judges will make the final decisions and award prizes for both sections: '18 and under' and 'over 18'.

Can you explain the usage rights if I enter the competition?

By entering the competition you authorise Freedom from Torture (FFT) to display, print, and distribute in any manner any photographs that you have entered in this competition in order to conduct and promote this competition, including the Freedom from Torture and Freedom from Torture North London social media channels. Each photographer retains copyright of his or her images, and proper credit lines will be attributed to each photographer when they are used in any publicity of FFT. This is a charity, so shots will only be used to promote Freedom from Torture fundraising initiatives.

If an entry is featured on social media, does it have any effect on the final judging?

No. Periodically we look at competition submissions and select some for inclusion on our social media channels. The judges will not begin looking at images until after the competition deadline has passed.

How can I get more exposure for my competition submission?

It’s easy! Every entrant has the ability to share their entry via social media. We’d love it if you could help us promote it.

When are the prizes awarded, and will the winners get featured anywhere?

Winners will be notified by email. We will be running three exhibitions where winners and runners up will be invited to a Private View and their work will be shown.

If my entry is accepted and you are hosting an exhibition, how will you reproduce my image?

In the event your image is part of the final physical exhibition we will contact you about how your image may be reproduced.

If I have more questions, how do I contact you?

Please email us at fftnlondon@gmail.com or use the contact form.
